Artist Statement
In viewing art in general, and my figurative work specifically, I want viewers not only to scan the surface and realize the technical competency but sense a real concern for reflecting variations in the subtle depth of the human spirit. This part is the hardest to achieve. This search to stir the mind and heart with deep feelings ranging from subdued serenity to moving passion is indeed elusive, but the most rewarding. Art without possessing the soul to move people imparts no life to sculpture or whichever form art may take. And Life is what we all desire; the kind contributing to our feeling alive and enboldened with purpose and understanding and meaning. This is what I search to evoke in every work of art I create. Again, art, for me, is not solely based on academic and technical (professional) competency — but must possess a deeper reason for being. My purpose is not to sell a better “widget”, but offer and contribute “meaning”. Only this is truly satisfying in the long term, only this rewards a compelling reason for creating art.
Only this qualifies as art.
